Surf Diego (Aug 31 - Sep 9)

While Heather was busy checking the efficacy of the Shark Dental Plan in Mexico, I stayed in San Diego to visit friends and the ocean myself. The first leg of my trip had me staying with two married friends from high school, Jess and Ross. They’re the type of friends who I can go a decade without talking to (which, for shame, I have) and when I reunite, it’s like no time has passed at all. During our time together, I snuggled with Biscuit (their Corgi), pretended not to notice the indifference of their two cats, and reconnected with Jess and Ross over Thai food, IPAs and sours from Helix Brewery, and a production of Romeo and Juliet featuring Meryl Streep’s daughter (she probably hates being referred to like that, but, it’s also likely more interesting for you) at the outdoor theatre of the Old Globe. Pretty much a perfect Labor Day weekend.

The balance of my separation anxiety from Heather was spent with two other friends, Rachel and Will in La Jolla. Also gems of people (I studied engineering Rachel at UW and have found scarce an industrial engineering major with whom I cannot hang for hours), we enjoyed tacos, Laguna Beach sunsets and a Padres game.

And, while all of the socializing with my friends from different chapters in my life was fantastic, the overactive introvert in me also got fed with four mornings of surfing. Reading about someone else’s surf experience is often less than 10% as interesting as the experience itself, so I’ll try to let the pictures do most of the talking, except where pictures couldn’t be procured. So, three potentially interesting points:

  1. My surf instructor got stung by a sting ray on the second day I was surfing (he only told me this on my last day)

  2. Dolphins and sea lions frequented the waves with me

  3. My accident-prone identity went unchallenged as I ended up tearing a muscle in my back and slipping three ribs (that, to date, are still popping out despite continued chiropractic and therapy care for the last week)

Besides the injury and subsequent pain, it was rad to get out on the waves for a few days and be active in a way that was near impossible while living in the Midwest.

(Note my arm in the final picture... I think that's where the ribs said, "¡Ay, dios mío... adiós!")

After reuniting with Heather on the 5th, we got to enjoy San Diego together staying in the Gaslamp district. We capped our trip with a few more friend visits: her friends Meg and Shelley, our shared friend MJ, and my cousin Charlie (unequivocally the most woke and high-EQ man I have ever met in his 20s). Oh, we also had a run-in with Eddie Kay Thomas after his production of Underpants that went something like this.

Heather unlocking electric Jump bike

EKT: You taking that bike?

Heather, motioning to me and 2nd bike: Yep, and that one, too, for her.

EKT, downtrodden: Oh...

Me, hopping on bike: Sorry, great show though!

We speed away.

Overall review of San Diego? After staying here, it is now among the few places Heather and I would consider living upon our return to the states. High praise? You betcha.
